Ham Radio Field Day 2026 — Are You Ready to Get on the Air?

Every year, on the fourth full weekend of June, amateur radio operators across North America pack up their gear, head outdoors, and do something remarkable — they set up emergency-capable radio stations from scratch and operate for 24 hours straight. It's called Field Day, and it's the biggest on-air event in amateur radio. Field Day 2026 runs June 28-29 and whether you're a seasoned operator or a curious newcomer, there's never been a better time to get involved.

What Is Field Day?

Field Day is sponsored by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) and is part contest, part public demonstration, and part emergency preparedness exercise. Clubs and individuals set up portable stations — often powered by generators or solar — and try to make as many contacts as possible across HF, VHF, and UHF bands.

But Field Day isn't just about the score. It's about community, skill-building, and proving that amateur radio works when everything else fails.

Why Field Day Matters

  • Emergency preparedness — operators practice setting up stations without commercial power
  • Public outreach — Field Day sites are open to the public, making it a great way to introduce people to ham radio
  • Skill building — from antenna setup to digital modes, Field Day pushes operators to try new things
  • Fun — there's nothing quite like operating a radio under the stars with fellow hams

How to Participate

  1. Find a local club — most clubs operate a Field Day site. Search the ARRL club finder at arrl.org
  2. Operate solo — you can participate as a home station (Class D) or portable individual
  3. Try a new mode — Field Day is a great time to try CW, FT8, or SSB if you haven't before
  4. Log your contacts — use free software like N1MM+ or Log4OM

New to Ham Radio? Field Day Is for You Too

You don't need a license to visit a Field Day site. Many clubs welcome the public and will let visitors try making a contact under the supervision of a licensed operator. It's one of the best ways to catch the ham radio bug!
